Small nuclear reactor info session

On June 27, Paul Acchione, P.Eng., delivered a presentation to the Simcoe-Muskoka Chapter on small nuclear reactors at to 27 members and guests. Paul discussed this up and coming technology and described some of the units that companies are working on to develop for the world market. One of the great advantages to this equipment is that they are factory built and tested and should bring down the lead time and cost per unit power over the conventional larger units such as the ones we have in Ontario. One example is Framatome’s Steam Cycle High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (SC-HTGR) which is a small, modular, graphite-moderated and helium-cooled, high-temperature nuclear reactor with a nominal peak power of 625 MWt.
