SUMMARY:Safety Engineering of Electric Vehicle Batteries in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Battery Test\n\n\n\nVehicles with hybrid and electric drive trains have become relatively commonplace today. They are made possible though many innovations in power train technology and engineering however\, the most important and challenging innovations have been in the energy storage component. If asked most people would agree that the customer wants and needs of the battery system can be reduced to four categories – energy\, power\, cost and safety. The picture would be complete if we assigned these requirements across the lifespan of the vehicle. Of these\, power is the only clear achievement. Cost is being dealt with through conventional engineering practices and materials innovations. Energy content is the focus of many different institutions and is already showing significant improvement over five years ago. Safety\, however\, is an assumed attribute by most customers but have been some surprises in this area. A handful of hybrid and electric vehicles have been destroyed to some extent by batteries that could not be controlled after an unexpected incident. It is the investigation of the effects of unexpected incidents that are being pursued by companies such as TUV SUD in Newmarket\, Ontario. This talk will present how TUV SUD is testing both batteries and vehicles. \n \nOur presenter\, Erik J. Spek\, P.Eng. is Chief Engineer for TÜV SÜD Canada with technical responsibility for battery and electric vehicle verification services in North America. He received degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo. \nIndustrial experience includes TÜV SÜD Canada\, Managing Director at Aloxsys Inc.\, Chief Engineer at Magna International\, Manager of Engineering and Operations at ABB Advanced Battery Systems and Director of Engineering at Powerplex Technologies. \nHe was a member of the ABB sodium sulfur battery team that provided 38 kWh battery packs for the Ford Ecostar program. Mr. Spek is a member of SAE since 1980 and a Certified Manufacturing Engineer in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He has authored and co-authored papers on sodium sulfur battery development and Lithium Ion battery testing and has written articles on battery technologies for Batteries International\, Charged and Penton Media. He is an SAE seminar leader on battery technology and safe handling of high voltage batteries and has delivered seminars to the energy storage industry\, academia\, government and other institutions. He has contributed to conferences on battery product standardization and presented at conferences including AABC (Advanced Automotive Batteries Conference)\, The Novi Battery Show\, SAE New Energy Vehicles Conference (Shanghai)\, Battery Safety Conference and IEEE PSES. He is leading TUV SUD’s R&D activities to support battery and electric vehicle standards development. \n \nRelatives and friends are welcome. Reduced admission price for those 18 years and under. \nNetworking is encouraged!

SUMMARY:Tour of Barrie Wastewater Treatment Facility
DESCRIPTION:Join PEO Simcoe-Muskoka Chapter for a tour of the Barrie Waste Water Treatment Facility (WwTF).\n\n\n\nBarrie’s WwTF has evolved with time as technology has improved and as flows have increased with an ever-growing population. Today\, Barrie’s effluent quality leads the industry with effluent pollutant levels that push limits of laboratory detection methods. Indeed\, effluent phosphorus and nutrient levels are often at or below detection limits. Effluent bacteria counts are usually zero. \nIn general\, natural pollution loads to Lake Simcoe far exceed the contribution of the WwTF. They recycle water by cleaning it and returning it to Kempenfelt Bay. They also re-use some effluent water to minimize use of potable water. They recycle nutrients by removing them and using them in biosolids which farmers use as fertilizer. And proudly recycle energy by turning biogas into either heat or electricity. The gas from the digesters is burned in hot water boilers and cogeneration engines. In power savings alone this translates to about $300\,000.00 per year. \nALL ATTENDEES MUST BRING THEIR OWN CSA GREEN TRIANGLE SAFETY FOOTWEAR \nTour is open to members and friends. Accompanied minors from 12-18 years old are welcome. \nPlease visit our website to sign up for the tour. All attendees must be registered in advanced. All proceeds from this event will be used to support the PEO Simcoe-Muskoka University Engineering Scholarship program.

SUMMARY:Elliot Lake’s Algo Mall Collapse
DESCRIPTION:On June 23\, 2012 a partial collapse of the roof of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake resulted in the death of two victims. OPP commissioned NORR Limited\, led by Hassan Saffarini\, P.Eng. to carry out a forensic investigation into the cause of collapse and the parameters that influenced it. \nThis presentation covers the subject from the early on-site inspection by NORR and its associates back in 2012 through the detailed analysis\, lab testing\, brainstorming and the formulation of the final report. Some of the findings will be shared to inform of the condition of the mall and the specific mechanism of the failure. The history of the mall will also be reviewed from design to construction\, early and ongoing leakage problems and attempts at repair. Through the life of the building a number of engineers had the opportunity to review the structure\, reflection on their perspectives will inform both the understanding of the progression of deterioration that was brewing underneath and the pitfalls of the investigations that have not succeeded in averting this tragedy.\nA Commission of Inquiry was formed and took almost two years to painstakingly collect the data and interview stakeholders\, witnesses and experts before issuing a detailed report in October 2014. The NORR investigation team gave its testimony over several days. The presentation will touch on that and on the Commission’s findings.\nOur presenter\, Hassan Saffarini\, P.Eng.\, PhD was the lead engineering investigator commissioned by OPP after the collapse of the Algo Mall. He is the head of Structural Engineering at NORR Architects and Engineers\, Toronto. Hassan is a graduate of Leeds University\, UK with a Masters Degree and PhD from the University of California\, Berkeley. He is also a Professor of Civil Engineering and taught for twenty five years in various universities in the Middle East and Canada. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Ryerson University. He has many publications in international journals in the area of structural and earthquake engineering. Before coming to Canada he had been a Cofounder and Executive Vice President of one of the Middle East’s largest consulting firms\, Consolidated Consultants. He is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and a LEED accredited professional (LEED AP BD+C). He has a long career both as a structural engineer and project manager. He has led the design and managed major projects in various sectors including high rises\, infrastructure projects and urban developments. For the past nine years he has been leading the design and contract administration of the structural work of the Union Station Revitalization Project involving the restoration of the heritage building and the construction of a retail mall underneath the busiest transportation hub in Canada.\nThe event is open to PEO and OECETT members. Networking is encouraged!

SUMMARY:Fire Protection Engineering Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:A quick search in the news about the most reported fires in recent history\, you will find the famous Toronto fire at “2 Forest Laneway” in 1995\, which caused 6 casualties. Caught on video and watched by thousands\, “The Address” building across from the world’s tallest building in Dubai\, caught fire on New Year’s Eve in 2014. And more recently\, “The Grenfell Tower” fire in London England\, which claimed the lives of 58 people on June 14\, 2017. \nThese incidents may seem unrelated\, but the investigational and forensics engineering work after the fire\, and the research and consulting work for new codes and standards are changing the way new buildings are being built since. This is commonly known as Fire Protection Engineering.\n“Fire Protection Engineering” is becoming a niche but sought-after discipline in the engineering world. It involves many traditional engineering disciplines: Civil\, Structural\, Electrical\, Mechanical\, Chemical and Material Sciences. This presentation will try to explain the fundamentals of Fire Protection Engineering\, and how it is helping to shape the construction industry and the future of our cities. We will look at the basics of what is involved in fire protection engineering\, and how it relates to code consulting and system design and commissioning.\nOur speaker\, Lui Tai\, P. Eng. is an Fire Protection Engineer with over 30 years of experience. He graduated from McMaster University in 1988\, and started his career with Siemens Canada. In the last 30 years\, he has worked on fire protection engineering at military establishments in the North Pole as well as the new midfield terminal in Abu Dhabi. He says his passion to save lives in his work keeps him motivated. \nLui is currently the Chair of PEO York Chapter\, and he is also a Director for Canadian Fire Alarm Association (Ontario Chapter)\, and has been a committee member for OBC Part 3 Technical Advisory Committee and ULC S524 sub-committee.\nRelatives and friends are welcome; Half price for 12- 18 year old when accompanied by a member.\nNetworking is encouraged!

SUMMARY:Amazon Fulfillment Centre Tour in Brampton
DESCRIPTION:Tour an Amazon Fulfillment Centre! \nSee the magic that happens after you click ‘buy’ on Amazon.ca by touring their first Canadian automated facility and seeing first-hand how they deliver to their customers. Tens of thousands of items leave this fulfillment centre each day – and for those who use Prime delivery in the GTA\, they get their packages at their door mere hours later.\nThe automated Brampton centre is an 855\,000 square feet\, four-storey building that opened in 2016. With a couple hundred robots\, each of these nine-foot automated “Amazon Robotics Drive Units” (capable of carrying up to 700 lbs) scan QR codes to detect their path and move in different directions within a grid. Using built-in sensor technology\, the robots don’t crash into each other\, even though they’re moving at 8 km/h. See them in action and how they work with Amazon employees to fulfill online orders.\nThis one hour tour will allow you to see how products are stowed\, picked\, packed\, scanned\, labelled and shipped\, all using automation\, computer and mechanical engineering that has products travelling along a 10 km long conveyer belt with optimized systems that maximize efficiency and reduce time.\nOpen to PEO members only and up to two guest when purchasing tickets. Must be 18 years or older. \nNote: Amazon does not charge for tours. All proceeds from this event will be used to fund and enhance Chapter activities. SUMMARY:Hydrogen: The Fuel of the Future
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s energy journey has been ever evolving from burning wood\, then coal\, then oil\, then natural gas (CH4) on its way to the ultimate fuel: hydrogen (H2). Hydrogen links our renewable solar\, wind and water electrical generation assets to not only our natural gas energy grid but also to our transportation sector. It has the potential to revolutionize how we think about and use energy.\nHydrogenics is a company with over 70 years of experience in hydrogen products and is the only company worldwide with industrial scale deployments in both fuel cell and electrolysis technology. \nAt this event you will learn about the technology\, the products\, the projects\, the challenges\, the advantages and the opportunities for renewable hydrogen. \nOur presenter\, Ms. Anna Murray\, P.Eng. joined Hydrogenics in 2012 and was responsible for managing several programs spanning the entire international organization. Based out of the head office in Mississauga\, she has managed developments for products in all the business areas supplied by Hydrogenics such as a complete hydrogen energy system for a remote mine in Northern Quebec and a fuelling station for California. She has worked on fuel cells for the mobile market\, including the design and development of a custom fuel cell engine for the world’s first hydrogen powered commuter trains in Germany. She has also worked on large scale Power-to-Gas applications and was responsible for the design and installation of a first of a kind plant in North America\, which is one of the largest in the world. She is one of only a handful of experts worldwide with practical experience in all aspects of the hydrogen economy. She is currently responsible for the renewable hydrogen product line for the global market.\nMs. Murray graduated from Queen’s University with a B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and is a registered professional engineer.  She is the Senior Program Manager at Hydrogenics and is bilingual in English and French. She is a Board member for the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) and is a TSSA licensed Hydrogen Technician.
